Image Intensified Astronomy

Night sky objects emit electromagnetic radiation across a broad spectrum. The human eye is only capable of "seeing" a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Our vision is limited to a narrow band of light from 400nm (violet) to 750nm (red) appropriately called visible light. Human vision is most sensitive at 550nm (green) allowing us to identify small colour variations and resolve greater detail of objects in the yellowish green colour range. Visual acuity drops off rapidly; 100nm either side of this peak in the red & blue ranges our sensitivity is less than 10%. Observations with the image Intensified Telescope Module reveal a lot of night sky activity not normally visible. Visible objects appear much brighter & normally invisible objects become visible to the eye.

The image Intensified Telescope Module reveals this unseen world.

Intensified Telescope Module main image

We have re-designed our image Intensified Telescope Eyepiece Module

This purpose built compact module incorporates a military grade 18mm image intensifier manufactured in the US by Litton/ ITT. We have sourced a limited number of used but in good condition image intensifiers some may have screen blemishes (small black spots) which are an inherent in the manufacturing process and in no way degrade the performance. The image Intensified Telescope Module mount into the 2" eyepiece port on your telescope, no tools required, it can be fitted in seconds.

Direct view & camera adaptable

The image Intensified Telescope Module can be used for real time direct viewing by installing a standard 2" eyepiece. It is also readily adaptable for night sky photography using any camera. Your camera will focus onto the 18mm output screen of the intensifier no expensive relay lenses required. Standard focal distance from the front of the snout to the image intensifier photocathode is 30mm however we can adjust this to suit your particular requirements.

Lightweight & compact design

Lightweight 350 grams & compact size the image Intensified Telescope Module is 95mm long & 60mm diameter (at the rear), front snout is 2" diameter X 42mm, longer snouts are available. Internal front thread is 48mm X .75 pitch allowing the fitting of a filter holder. Power is provided from a CR123 lithium battery capable of providing >100 hours of continuous use; the battery compartment has a positive action press button ON/ OFF switch.

How does it work?

At the heart of the image Intensified Telescope Module is a high performance military grade image intensifier. This electronic device is sensitive across a broad spectrum, from 300 ~900 nanometers, detecting incoming photons and using the photo-electric effect to intensify (amplify) an objects brightness up to 70,000 times making dull distant objects bright and normally invisible objects, visible with the human eye.

  1. Light energy (photons) from the night sky are collected and focused by the telescope's optics onto the image intensifier photocathode
  2. A light sensitive Ga As coating on the photocathode converts photon energy into an electron stream which pass into the MCP (micro channel plate)
  3. The MCP is an electron multiplier device comprising millions of glass fiber channels. A single electron striking the wall of an MCP channel results in the emission of secondary electrons which in turn strike the channel walls producing more secondary electrons. This cascading process results in an output stream comprising many thousands of electrons for each single electron entering the MCP
  4. Electronics module boosts the 3 volt battery supply and provides drive voltages up to 8,000 volts for the image intensifier
  5. The amplified electron stream lands on the intensifier output screen in the same pattern and intensity as the original image. The final stage of the process is to convert the electron stream into a visible image which is achieved by the phosphor coating on the output screen
  6. Transfer lens assembly focuses the image directly onto the CCD element of the camera or into the optical eyepiece

Image intensifiers provide a much brighter image with more visible detail. Shutter speeds (exposure times ) can be substantially reduced resulting in clearer images with less motion induced blur.
